Health Canada, in conjunction with the U.S. Consumer Products Safety Commission (CPSC) and Mexico’s Consumer Protection Federal Agency (PROFECO), has issued an official recall for oven mitts manufactured in China, supplied by Cherry Hill, NJ-based ICUP, Inc., and sold by Loot Crate in Los Angeles, which sells monthly mystery boxes of licensed branded merchandise to subscribers. The mitts lack thermal protection, posing the threat of burns.

As of this writing, Loot Crate has received 241 claims of burn injuries, including reports that the gloves melted and burned users’ skin.

The recall includes the Marvel Thanos Infinity Gauntlet oven mitt, with a 100% polyester outer shell in golden yellow with blue, purple, green, red and black accents. The mitt includes the “Marvel” logo at the wrist, while “Made in China” and UPC code 15129322 are printed on the care label on the inside seam.

“Consumers should immediately stop using the recalled oven mitts and contact Loot Crate (www.lootcrate.com) to receive a replacement product of equal or greater value,” said the CPSC in an official recall statement.

An estimated 15,000 mitts were sold in Canada by Loot Crate as part of the company’s May 2016 subscription “Power” theme box. The subscription was available from April 2016 through May 2016 for about $20. In addition, 360,000 mitts were sold in the U.S. and about 380 in Mexico. While ICUP, Inc. is not an ASI-listed supplier, a search of ESP for “oven mitt” turned up 471 items from 165 vendors.
