I Earned My BASI: Heather Malcomb
Heather Malcomb may be a sales rep at BNT Promotional Products (asi/129459) by day, but she tears up the track as Judge Dreadhead, roller derby queen, by night. An inherent people pleaser with a knack for customer service, promotional products are right up her alley. With nearly 14 years of customer service and problem solving under her belt, she has the know-how to get it done. Malcomb earned her BASI in August 2016.
Who in the business world do you admire most or strive to emulate?
Both of the owners here at BNT, Bill Burgher and Scott Terhaar – from their friendly conversations with customers on scene, to their “Never let them see you sweat” problem-solving skills behind the scenes, and everything in between. They’ve managed to create a very successful and long term small business that they can be extremely proud of.
If they made a movie about your life, what would it be about and what actor would play you?
It would probably have to be about roller derby in small town USA, and would star Melissa McCarthy, mainly because I think she’s hilarious. Aside from work, derby definitely takes up most of my off-time, and has become a huge part of who I am.
What’s the best advice you’ve ever received?
When you fall, get right back up and try again.
What’s one thing you’d do to improve the ad specialty industry?
I actually can’t think of anything in particular. I got a lot to learn, so I’m sure I’ll come up with something eventually.
What’s on your business and personal bucket list?
Earn my MASI, reach $500,000 in sales in one year, hike to Machu Picchu, go bungee jumping and play roller derby on a banked track.
What’s one sentence you’d like to hear from your boss?
"I know I can depend on you to handle any job that comes your way."
If you could choose an age to remain forever, which age would you choose? Why?
29. I think at that age you’ve really learned a lot about who you are, so you’re more confident than your former teenage self, but still willing to take some risks and live a little.
