HanesBrands CEO to Retire
The hunt for Gerald W. Evans Jr.’s replacement has begun.
After 36 years, Gerald W. Evans Jr. is calling it a day at HanesBrands (asi/59528).
The CEO of the Winston-Salem, NC-based global apparel maker told the company’s board of directors that he’ll be retiring at the end of the 2020 fiscal year, which concludes for Hanes on Jan. 2, 2021.
“Under his leadership, the company has expanded its geographic footprint, broadened its portfolio of premium brand offerings and pioneered product, process and supply chain innovation, helping transform Hanes into the world’s largest everyday basic apparel company,” said Ronald L. Nelson, chairman of the Hanes Board of Directors. “We thank Gerald and appreciate his willingness to continue with the company through year end to ensure a seamless transition of leadership.”
The board has started searching for a new CEO. Russell Reynolds Associates, an independent executive search firm, is assisting. Internal and external candidates are being considered.
Evans joined HanesBrands in 1983. He became CEO in 2016. Highlights of his CEO tenure include leading the company as it increased earnings per share, generated organic growth, reached nearly $7 billion in total worldwide revenue, diversified geographically, generated a record $2.1 billion in cumulative cash flow over the last three years, and doubled its annual Champion brand sales to almost $2 billion.
“After more than three and a half decades at Hanes, I am confident that now is the right time for the company to transition to its next generation of leadership,” Evans said.
