Promotions Planner: Thanks, Not Pranks
Start presenting ideas to clients for campaigns centered on April observances.
While the most obvious April promo campaign might be to prank employees on April Fools’ Day with a gag gift, they’ll likely appreciate the chance to wear their favorite PJs to the office for National Wear Your Pajamas to Work Day on April 16 a little more. Read on for more campaign ideas to pitch to a diverse array of clients – from record stores to colleges and universities – based on unique April holidays.
April 2: National DIY Day
National DIY Day was created back in 2016 by Lynn Lilly, founder of crafting and DIY platform Craft Box Girls, to celebrate all things “do-it-yourself.” Whether fueled by a desire to save money in 2025 or a love of making, recognizing this occasion is sure to bring a boost of team creativity.
PITCH: Suggest that craft, hobby or home improvement stores encourage customers to stock up on DIY essentials with free branded tote bags or project kits with purchase.
April 6: National Student-Athlete Day
There are more than 500,000 collegiate athletes that compete across the NCAA’s three athletic divisions and 1,100 member schools each year – and that doesn’t count the millions of elementary, middle and high school students active in sports. Schools catering to all ages can use this day to showcase the accomplishments of their student athletes.
PITCH: Colleges and universities can show some extra appreciation to their student athletes, especially seniors approaching graduation, with a new branded backpack or team swag.
April 12: National Record Store Day
Held on a Saturday in April each year, Record Store Day is a day to celebrate the independently owned record and music stores throughout the United States. Since its conception in 2007, it’s grown into an occasion for exclusive artist vinyl releases, meet and greets with top artists and more.
PITCH: Record stores or similarly music-focused retailers can offer exclusive giveaways like stickers, luggage tags or other merch with purchase.
April 16: National Wear Your Pajamas to Work Day
This fun observance was created by a pajama brand to reward those working late on their tax forms the prior day, but as more and more employees return to their offices, National Wear Your Pajamas to Work Day may hold even broader appeal for those accustomed to staying in their flannels all day.
PITCH: Encourage employees to take advantage of the holiday whether they’re in office or remote with a set of branded pajamas or sweatpants.
April 22: School Bus Driver Appreciation Day
School Bus Drivers Day was officially signed into California state legislature in 2009 as a way to draw special attention to bus drivers for their contributions to students and schools. Even if you’re not located in the Golden State, it’s still an opportunity to show some appreciation.
PITCH: Suggest to parent-teacher associations or school boards that they offer a thank-you to the bus drivers who shuttle their students back and forth from school each day.
