Your Fashion Forecast: Top 7 Apparel Trends for 2022
Where retail goes, promo is sure to follow. Keep your clients outfitted in style with our handy guide on what’s hot for next year.
Sometimes shifting fashion trends can come at us out of nowhere. For example, 2021 was the shocking year we had to throw out our beloved skinny jeans and dig through the attic (or our parents’) for those ’70s bell-bottoms and ’90s straight-legs. Today, with the promo industry aligning more closely with retail, it’s helpful to know about the next big trends before they hit so that you have fashion-forward merchandise ready for your clients. You’ll be thankful for the heads-up, since 2022 may be even more shocking than ’21 as we continue to revert to styles of the past. Hop in the time machine (or maybe, just your mother’s closet) and get ready for the ride because we’ve done the research to present the top seven apparel trends for the 2022 season.
1. Patterned and Mini
Plaid and gingham patterned mini-skirts and suits are back. That’s right, just cut out the jacket shoulder pads, perhaps a few inches off the skirt, and you’re set. With Kim Kardashian’s SKIMS line gaining popularity, be ready to see these suits and patterns worn over shapewear and bodysuits for figure-flattering styles, or tights for those who’d rather show less leg. This look is great for the office, but will also be popular for a night out. Channel Pretty Woman and pair with over-the-knee boots, because they’re also making a comeback.
2. The Early 2000s Return
Those unforgettable looks that we once loved, then cringed over years later have returned. That includes the iconic Britney Spears and Justin Timberlake denim-on-denim style with bold accents like a colored beret, or maybe a bedazzled headband with butterflies. Don’t forget that the Y2K-era was huge on fun and eccentric textures, meaning crochet tops, corsets over T-shirts, and extra-fuzzy, cropped cardigans will be all the rage. You’ll have flashbacks of Green Day concerts and talking on your flip-phone with these trends.
3. The Baggier, the Better
In extension to the Y2K comeback boom, 2022 is sporting the infamous cargo pants – the perfect leisurewear that’s both comfortable and convenient (you’ll have a pocket for everything). But don’t think this look is just for lounging at home or making a quick trip to the grocery store. Pair with a fitted top, and perhaps strappy heels or platform boots, and you’re ready for the entire day.
4. Be Bold, Be Mismatched
Clashing patterns and bold color combinations are in, so forget all those years of mom teaching you how to match your outfit for school because 2022 welcomes it all. Want to pair a leopard top with plaid pants for a night out? It works. Even office-wear is favoring this trend. The guys can pair a checkered collar shirt with a floral-patterned tie. As for the girls, your magenta jacket and bright yellow top will go great together. Getting dressed in the morning has never been easier – though we recommend minimal accessories to prevent too much clash.
5. All About the Fringe
As if 2022 fashion trends weren’t enough of a whirlwind, be ready for Western-glam to surface in popularity. Suede and leather fringe on skirts, jackets, purses, boots and just about everything else will gain traction as we enter the new year. This look works for the office and everywhere else, as you can dress it up or down for your needs. Try neutral shades of fringed-wear and pair with a pop of color, or maybe some chunky boots.
6. Neutral & Oversized
Although oversized suits and trench coats have been popular for some time, 2022 is all about keeping it neutral – and comfortable. Perhaps after the past crazy two years and increase in working from home, the relaxed style is taking us by storm. Natural shades with simple additions, like flats and a T-shirt are all you need for a great office look. Trade out the flats with some red heels for a pop of color and you’re ready to meet up with friends later.
7. 50 Shades of Yellow
Tangerine, mustard, canary, gold: Yellow is the go-to color for 2022. Though standard yellow may not be a favorable color for all, you can test out shades that fit you best. The ideal part about this trend is that it works for the office, a Saturday morning yoga class, and everything in between. Even yellow accents, such as tinted sunglasses, a headband, hat or bold earrings can bring a look together and keep you up to date on fashion trends.
