Key Takeaways

• OVO, a lifestyle brand co-founded by Canadian Rapper Drake, has launched a limited-edition Made-in-Canada apparel collection celebrating the 25th anniversary of Degrassi: The Next Generation.

• The collaboration taps into the continued appeal of nostalgia-driven merchandise.

October marks 25 years since the premiere of the beloved Canadian teen drama TV show Degrassi: The Next Generation, and a well-known former actor from the series is helping to celebrate the milestone.

OVO, the lifestyle brand co-founded by Canadian Rapper Drake (who played Degrassi Community School student Jimmy Brooks on the show), along with licensing company WildBrain, released a limited edition collection of Degrassi-inspired garments, all made in Canada.

Degrassi collection

The OVO x Degrassi Collection, which dropped on Sept. 25, includes a recreated Jimmy Brooks basketball jersey, Panthers No. 86 football jersey, varsity jackets, sweat suits, T-shirts and accessories.

The OVO x Degrassi Collection, which includes a recreated Jimmy Brooks basketball jersey, Panthers football jersey, varsity jackets, sweat suits, T-shirts and accessories, dropped on Friday, Sept. 25 at 10 a.m. online. They were also made available at OVO stores in Canada (including in Toronto, Calgary, Vancouver and Burnaby) and The Grove in Los Angeles.

The classic varsity jacket at the centre of the collection features layered twill patchwork and retro graphics. Fans of the show can also purchase T-shirts, sweatshirts, joggers, tote bags and more.

“Degrassi and OVO share deep Toronto roots, with ties that reach back to Jimmy Brooks and some of the franchise’s most memorable years,” said Ben Peace, executive vice president of franchise at WildBrain. “Drawing inspiration from the iconic Panthers athletic program, the collection captures the school spirit and athletic tradition that generations of fans have come to associate with Degrassi.”

The Degrassi franchise first aired in 1979 and had multiple series. The Next Generation ran from 2001 to 2015, making it especially popular with millennial viewers.

Nostalgia has been a major selling point in recent years – apparel with a vintage aesthetic has been especially popular. In addition, Made-in-Canada products and Canadian pride have soared in popularity with consumers as trade conflict with the U.S. continues.
