Phillies Fans Set a Merch-Buying Record After Reaching World Series
The club’s rabid fan base purchased team-branded pennant-clinching/World Series gear at an unprecedented pace over a 24-hour period.
Whether or not the Philadelphia Phillies win the World Series remains to be seen, but fans of the team have already made history thanks to their rabid appetite for team-branded merchandise.
After the Phillies defeated the San Diego Padres on Sunday to reach only their eighth World Series in the team’s 139-year history, the club’s “phanatical” supporters set a record by purchasing more League Championship Series (LCS) winner merch in a 24-hour period on Fanatics than any other fan base before.
“Philadelphia has some of the most passionate fans in all of sports, and their response to the National League Championship Series clinch on Sunday following this improbable playoff run has been remarkable,” with “record-breaking sales” to mark their first World Series trip in 13 years, Jack Boyle, a senior Fanatics executive, told The Philadelphia Inquirer.
Fanatics, a manufacturer and web-based merchandise retailer, is the official e-commerce partner of Major League Baseball. Following the Fightins win in the National League Championship Series, the top-selling items on Fanatics were all products tied to the Phillies pennant win.
The men’s and women’s Locker Room Championship T-shirts, a New Era Locker Room Championship hat, a New Era World Series patch hat, and a Nike men’s World Series pullover hoodie were among the hottest sellers.

The previous 24-hour record for LCS merch sales on Fanatics was set by the Chicago Cubs fans in 2016 after they defeated the Los Angeles Dodgers to reach their first World Series since 1945. The Cubs went on to defeat Cleveland to win their first World Series in 108 years.
The Phillies championship drought hasn’t been nearly so long, but it has been a barren stretch for the team. The Phillies last made the playoffs in 2011. Their most recent World Series appearance was in 2009, and their last win in 2008.
The Phillies only have won two World Series (the other came in 1980), but that hasn’t diminished fans’ love for the team that’s the oldest continuously operated one-name, one-city franchise in all of professional U.S. sports.

In the World Series, the Phillies will take on the Houston Astros, the American League champs who are favored to win baseball’s biggest prize. While Phillies fans have taken first place in the merch-purchasing department, the Astros supporters weren’t too shabby either: Per MLB and Fanatics, the Astros and Phillies set a 24-hour record for combined ALCS and NLCS winner merchandise sales, eclipsing the record previously set by Chicago and Cleveland in 2016.
